After reading this writing prompt, I couldn’t help but wonder about why we as humans are so focused on seeing what is wrong. We listen so intently to news reports like: “This nation is going to war,” or “OMG look at this celebrity behaving badly!” When enough people take these words to heart, then a vicious cycle is born. No longer are we able to focus on the goodness, but are instead plagued with visions of fires, wars, deaths, and explosions.

Worse yet is the constant stream of advertisements, telling us we are fat or incomplete individuals. “Get this skin cream and look 20 years younger instantly!” “Try this new diet to lose 50 pounds in 2 weeks!”

With this bombardment of negativity, it is so easy to lose sight of what is right. It all starts within. Are we content with ourselves? If you are one of those people who can’t stand looking at themselves in the mirror, or who is so quick to find flaws with your image, then you are not truly free. Take a look at the world around you and see that life has beauty in it at every turn. That cute puppy, that bed of flowers, the singing birds; they don’t worry about whether they are free or not. They are simply happy being alive, finding joy at every opportunity.

Every morning, try waking up to the beautiful sunrise while drinking your favorite coffee or tea. Reflect on the beauty of the moment and realize that everything is free and beautiful, including yourself. Happiness is the true freedom. Don’t ever let anyone else ruin moments like these.

I wanted to write a short short story showing why it is important to focus on your inner freedom:

So many times. So many times I have stared into this mirror. How long will it take?

Angeline sat quietly and stared into her soul.

Ugh, I am just so UGLY. Why can’t I be good looking like everyone else?

Maybe today was the day she could somehow grow wings and fly away.

Yea right. Everyone knows people don’t have wings. Wishes are for fools and dreamers.

An image of a boy appeared beside her.

You’re fat. You’re ugly. Your hair looks likes snakes! You’re nothing but a prissy sissy!

“Shut up! You don’t know anything!” The mirror shattered into millions of tiny pieces. These shards of illusion cut her fists, and blood dripped onto the floor.

Is this the price I have to pay to be beautiful?

The ghostly boy grinned, vanishing forever into her mind.

The illusive image laid silent, never to return. Yet a blanket of warmth comforted her for reasons she did not know.

At last, the lion has defeated the mouse.

She looked around to see who the speaker was, but no one was there.

I must be crazy. But at least I don’t have to look at myself anymore.

She breathed a sigh of relief and stepped through the open door before her.
